He was asked a simple question on Saturday: how far along is a possible attack on Iran?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Donald Trump did not give a date, a plan, or a denial. He gave a shrug, a grin, and a line that travelled around the world within the hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Do you really think I’d tell you that? Maybe tomorrow,” Trump told reporters after casting his early midterm ballot in Florida. “There’s a possibility I will.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, in the same breath, he offered the opposite ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There’s also a possibility we’ll have a nice, big, beautiful agreement,” he said. “They want to make a deal, but the problem is, will they hold the deal?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is the whole story of this weekend in one exchange: threat and invitation, delivered together, with no one \u2014 not allies, not adversaries, not even the reporters standing in front of him \u2014 quite sure which one to believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump’s remarks came a day after he warned at a Florida rally that America could launch “another little epic fury” against Iran. He has also written on Truth Social that the United States is having productive discussions with Tehran and will not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Put those statements side by side and the tension is obvious. A strike “maybe tomorrow” would be Sunday, October 25 \u2014 well before November 3. A promise of no attack before the midterms points the other way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump did not resolve the contradiction on Saturday. If anything, he leaned into it. “I may have to finish it off, or maybe they’ll make a deal,” he said at a rally in Georgia later that day. “But I’m not sure. Either way, we win.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is not an abstract debate. The United States and Israel have been at war with Iran since late February, and the conflict, despite a ceasefire and talk of a peace deal, has never fully closed. Oil markets have already felt it. So have American drivers, with fuel prices a central issue in the final days before the midterms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump’s case, as he put it on Saturday, is that the military job is largely done. He praised American forces, claimed Iran’s air power had been destroyed, and argued that Tehran was left with little but soaring inflation. His goal, he said, is to make sure Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon \u2014 permanently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’ve got to make it permanent,” he said. “That’s the only reason I’m doing it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Iran, for its part, has denied reports that it offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifting the American naval blockade, calling that account a fabrication. Tehran has not, in the reporting so far, publicly accepted Trump’s terms for a deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No strike has been announced. No deal has been signed. What exists is a president publicly keeping both options alive, in public, days before an election in which the cost of living is the issue voters say matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That ambiguity may be the point. A warning costs nothing. A deal would be a prize. A war would be a gamble. Trump, on Saturday, refused to choose \u2014 and made sure everyone heard him refuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
