The crowd in Corpus Christi, Texas, was already roaring when Donald Trump got to the line he clearly wanted them to hear. On Tuesday, October 27, at a midterm rally in the port city, the president looked out at his supporters and summed up his foreign policy in a single sentence.<\/p>\n
"I ended eight wars, but five of them were ended by the use of trade, like India and Pakistan," he said.<\/p>\n
Then he told the story the way only he tells it \u2014 as a phone call, a warning, and a number so large it stopped the room.<\/p>\n
Trump said he rang the prime ministers of India and Pakistan while their forces were already a week and a half into a confrontation. Eleven planes had been shot down, he said, and two nuclear-armed countries were, in his words, in the middle of a raging war.<\/p>\n
"I called up two great prime ministers. I said, 'Look, here's the story: If you go to war \u2014 they already shot down 11 planes, 11 planes, but they were in the midst, they were a week and a half in. Would you agree, Ted, that war was raging? And they're nuclear powers; it would have been terrible,'" Trump told the rally, turning at one point to Senator Ted Cruz.<\/p>\n
Then came the threat. "And I said, if you go to war, if you keep doing this, I'm going to put 250% tariff on each of you, and you're never going to be able to do business in the United States," he said.<\/p>\n
According to Trump, the leaders pushed back. "'No, no, no, you can't do \u2014' I said, 'I'm going to do it,'" he recalled. The fighting, he said, stopped.<\/p>\n
The claim did not come out of nowhere. Trump was speaking days after the Nobel Peace Prize went to Navi Pillay, the Indian-origin South African jurist \u2014 a choice he dismissed at the rally as "a woman that nobody ever heard of." For months, Trump has argued publicly that his interventions deserved the prize, and the eight-wars claim has become his shorthand for that argument.<\/p>\n
He has made versions of it before, and each time it has drawn the same split reaction: supporters hear a president who used American economic power to stop bloodshed, while critics note that the conflicts he lists were ceasefires and de-escalations shaped by many hands, not single-handed endings.<\/p>\n
What is new here is the specificity. The 250% figure, the phone-call framing, and the claim that trade \u2014 not troops, not treaties \u2014 did the work in five of the eight cases. It is Trump making his case for economic statecraft in the plainest possible language, a week before voters decide control of Congress.<\/p>\n
There is a reason the India-Pakistan example lands so hard. Both countries hold nuclear weapons, and any sustained war between them would alarm every capital on earth. Trump knows that, and he leaned into it on stage: this was not a trade dispute, he argued, but a catastrophe averted by a tariff threat.<\/p>\n
Whether historians will credit the tariff threat the way Trump does is another question entirely. What is not in doubt is the political purpose of the story. With the midterms on November 3, Trump is asking voters to judge him not on promises but on wars he says are already over \u2014 and to believe that the same hardball tactics can work again.<\/p>\n
