Trump Says Iran War Will ‘Get Wrapped Up Soon’ as US Reportedly Warns Allies of Post-Midterm Strikes

President Donald Trump said on 30 October that the war with Iran “is going to get wrapped up soon,” adding that Washington needs a guarantee Tehran will never obtain a nuclear weapon. The remarks came in a KCMO radio interview published on Thursday, days before the US midterm elections on 3 November.

The interview followed a White House meeting on Thursday at which US CENTCOM chief Admiral Brad Cooper briefed Trump on military options for Iran, according to the Wall Street Journal. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine attended the meeting, the Journal reported.

On Friday 30 October, Iran’s navy said it had destroyed a US unmanned vessel in the eastern Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media. The claim adds to the week’s escalation in the Gulf, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

The Associated Press reported on 29 October that the United States had warned allies to prepare for possible strikes on Iran and retaliation after the elections. That report cited two anonymous diplomats and described a strike plan lasting several days, but it also made clear that Trump has made no final decision and that the White House declined to comment.

The Wall Street Journal also reported outreach by Vice President JD Vance to Iran. Trump denied that the contact was about negotiations, saying it concerned medical supplies.

What is confirmed is Trump’s 30 October interview, the White House military briefing as reported by the Journal, and Iran’s Hormuz claim as carried by its state media. What is not confirmed is any final decision to strike, the scale or timing of any operation, and Iran’s vessel-destruction claim, which has no US confirmation. The allies-warning itself rests on anonymous diplomatic sources.

The story matters because it places the threat of a renewed US-Iran conflict directly on the eve of an election, with American allies reportedly already being told to brace.
